Trudging onto ice-covered Evergreen Lake, Bob Zavodsky of Mountain Foothills Rotary was carrying a large blue barrel. Closely following on the brisk afternoon were members and staff of the Evergreen Park and Recreation District’s Special Needs Program.
Placing the barrel at the lake last Wednesday, Jan. 2, marked the beginning of the organization's annual Evergreen Ice Melt Contest that benefits area organizations.
After finding just the right spot for the barrel, Rotarian Jerry Lautigar scored the ice with a chain saw to hold the rack on which it will rest until the spring thaw.
When the icy surface of the lake melts and the barrel falls into the water, four people will win cash prizes. A first prize of $1,000 will be awarded to the person who comes closest to guessing the time and date the barrel goes into the water. The runner-up will receive $500. The third-place award is $250, and fourth is $125.
Proceeds from ticket sales go to support Evergreen Christian Outreach, the EPRD Special Needs Program and charitable causes of the Mountain Foothills Rotary Foundation.
People can join the Ice Melt Contest by purchasing tickets and entering the date and time when they believe the barrel will fall through the ice. Tickets and more contest details are available at www.EvergreenIceMelt.com.
To give would-be participants a little help in picking a date, the Ice Melt website publishes past dates the barrel has fallen, which range from March 5 to April 7.
Local sponsors also are invited to help Mountain Foothills Rotary reach this year’s $20,000 fund-raising goal.

The barrel contest in Evergreen began several years ago after Rotarians visiting Dillon learned of the ice-melt contest that the Rotary club there offered. Several members of the Mountain Foothills Rotary club decided this would be a good fund-raiser for the club. With help from Evergreen sponsors and members, the first Ice Melt Contest began on Dec. 31 2006, in conjunction the Skate the Lake event.
