Evergreen girls earn top-10 finish

The boys team places 14th at state meet

COLORADO SPRINGS — Camille Morales said that she couldn’t have said it any better, but it’s seemingly true when it comes to Evergreen High School cross country. It’s not about the individuals as much as it’s about the program itself.
That truth has never been more so than it was in 2013.
Evergreen’s girls and boys teams each won league and regional championships this season, even if the teams lacked true No. 1 runners. There were few individual accolades, but, as a team, the Cougars were the same old program. There they were again at the 4A state championships on Oct. 26 at the Norris-Penrose Event Center proving that fact.
Evergreen’s girls finished eighth with 233 points, while the boys were 14th with 325. Each team placed as well as they did in spite of the fact that the girls had just two seniors at state and the boys one.
“Our coaches are amazing. They have it down to a science. We all felt really prepared thanks to them,” said Morales, a junior who finished 32nd in 20 minutes, 45.8 seconds. She placed 25 seconds back of sophomore Caitlin Schmitt, who placed 17th.
Other finishers for the Evergreen girls were sophomore Cat Moss (20:56), senior Jane Jensen (21:56.9), senior Hannah Chamberlain (22:02.9), junior Sydney Grob (22:17.4) and sophomore Kate Gibson (22:27.4).
Though history would tell you otherwise, the EHS girls weren’t expecting the kind of year that they accomplished because of their youth.
Leading the boys team was sophomore Will Michener, who came in 49th in 17:53.65. Other finishers were sophomore Matt Kline (18:00.85), sophomore Alex Aafedt (18:06.30), junior Aaron Wald (18:31.55), senior Wes Johnson (18:33.35), junior Eric Temple (18:53.95) and junior Daniel Hassell (20:26.05).
The Norris-Penrose course challenges runners, especially between the first and second mile marker, with its hilly terrain. But the Evergreen runners have come used to such courses.
“I think that it really helped training in the mountains. It’s an advantage,” Michener said.
