Youngsters who enter an Evergreen Rodeo Parade essay contest will have a chance to be selected as a grand marshal for this year’s event, with the theme Under the Rodeo Big Top.

Six children ages 5 to 12 will be chosen from contestants’ essays on “Why I would like to be a parade grand marshal in the Evergreen Rodeo Parade.”

All entries must be handwritten and within a maximum number of words for three age groups. Children ages 5 to 7 need to write a maximum of 65 words; ages 8 to 10, 100 words or less; and ages 11 to 12, a maximum of 200 words.

The contest title is not included in the word count for the entries.

The contest is open to all youngsters in mountain area communities. They do not need to Evergreen residents to participate.

Entries must be postmarked by May 28 and mailed to the Canyon Courier c/o PARADE CONTEST, 27902 Meadow Drive, Suite 200, Evergreen, CO 80439.

All entries will be judged by the Canyon Courier's panel, whose decisions will be final.

Two winners in each age group will be notified by June 5. Winning essays will be printed in the June 12 edition of the Canyon Courier before the Evergreen Rodeo Parade on Saturday, June 15.

Winners need to be dressed in circus costumes of choice and will ride at the front of the parade.
