GREELEY — The Evergreen Cougars rallied once to reach the 4A District 2 baseball finals, but couldn’t rally a second time to reach the eight-team double-elimination state tournament on May 12.
A day after inclement weather postponed their district opener against Coronado, the Cougars rallied for three runs in the final two innings to win 8-7.
Evergreen led 5-3 going into the fifth before Coronado scored three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to go ahead 7-5. The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the seventh before winning it with a run in the eighth.
But against host Northridge in the district finals, the Cougars found themselves in a 5-0 hole early. Evergreen pulled to within 5-4 in the fourth, but the Grizzlies all but put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Evergreen capped its season with a 15-6 record.
