The E. coli infections in eight local children have been traced to elk droppings in the Evergreen area.
The state health department reported that specimens obtained from elk droppings in the Evergreen area have tested positive for the same strain of E. coli O157 bacteria that was identified in the children.
Eight children ages 4 to 12 tested positive with E. coli from July through late October. The children do not attend the same school.
