Fifth annual Dam Ducky Derby is Saturday

The ducks are lining up for another dramatic plunge over the dam at Evergreen Lake and the race to the finish line on Saturday.

The excitement is growing along with the number of bright yellow and black rubber duckies participating in the fifth annual Dam Ducky Derby sponsored by the Evergreen Downtown Business Association.

Nearly half of the 8,000 rubber ducks available for bid have been spoken for, said Trish Wales, EDBA president. And most of the tickets for the 300 black ducks that offer the winner a trip to Mexico are sold.

Joyce Masyga of Endless Travel is looking forward to her third year as the unofficial “Duchess of Ducks” for the event.

“I really enjoy the whimsical fun of it,” Masyga said. “I hear all these people talking, see happy families … . It’s all good.”

The event begins at 11 a.m. with carnival games for kids, face painting, live music and refreshments in the downtown Evergreen parking lot.

After the 1 p.m. plunge over the dam, the race is on for the ducks, with some help from wranglers who keep the little chubby fellows from getting stuck as they float down Bear Creek.

The first-place winner will receive a $3,000 cash award; second place brings $1,500, and third place $500. Other prizes will be awarded in the form of gifts from local businesses.

The cost to enter the derby is $5 for one duck, $25 for a Six Quack, and $60 for a Quack Pack of 15. Participants also have the option of going “Totally Quackers” and bidding on 25 ducks for $100.

Duck chances may be purchased at the EDBA website at www.downtownevergreen.com. Tickets also are available at Seasonally Yours and at Evergreen Crafters.

Winners will emerge as the ducks make their way across the finish line at Highland Haven. All the ducks will have numbers that correspond to the names of participants for identification. Those who purchase tickets for the race do not need to present at the event to win.

The popular Dam Ducky Derby T-shirts for adults and children will be available for purchase at the event, and also will be offered as prizes, along with gift cards from downtown merchants.

A portion of proceeds will be contributed to local children’s charities, including Camp Comfort sponsored by Mount Evans Home Health Care & Hospice; the Bootstraps scholarship program; the Evergreen Park and Recreation District's special-needs program; and the Jeffco Public Library Evergreen summer reading program for youth.

The EDBA also uses proceeds from the derby for holiday events it offers in downtown Evergreen.
