-A A +A
By Sandy Barnes

This year’s Music Festival and Art Show at Evergreen Lake on July 4 offers those attending the opportunity to view the work of area artists and listen to a variety of sounds ranging from symphonic melodies to Celtic tunes.

The event begins at 10 a.m. with a performance by the Sedici Corde String Quartet, a group of four young musicians playing traditional chamber works. The art show also begins at this time in the Evergreen Lake House, where artists will demonstrate creative techniques.

At 11 a.m. the Denver Brass takes the stage to play a variety of music ranging from classical to jazz, Broadway and Latin. The group creates sound with brass, bagpipes, steel drums, hand bells, fiddlers, vocals and soloists. The Rocky Mountain Highland Dancers and the Celtic Colorado Pipes and Drums will follow with spirited performances.

Beginning at noon, Evergreen musician John Erlandson and the Mostly Pretty Random All-Stars will continue the celebration with their special blend of musical styles.

The Jefferson Symphony Orchestra will perform with the Evergreen Chorale at 2 p.m. In keeping with the July 4 tradition of more than three decades, the symphony orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s "1812 Overture," as well as many other popular pieces with a July 4 theme.
In addition to music and art, Trout Unlimited and the Evergreen Nature Center are planning entertainment for children at the festival.

Entries in a kids’coloring contest will also be displayed and judged during the event. Prizes will be awarded in three categories and will include a $25 gift certificate to a local ice creamery. All children who bring a qualified entry to the festival will receive a free ice cream.

For entry rules, visit www.evergreenmusicfestival.org.

Tickets for the music festival are $10 per person and can be purchased online at the festival website. Children under 12 are admitted free.

July 4 Freedom Run

The annual Freedom Run will take place on July 4 before the Evergreen Music Festival and Art Show.

A benefit for Mt. Evans Home Health and Hospice, the 5K event begins at 8 a.m. at Evergreen Middle School on Hiwan Drive.

Participants should arrive at least 45 minutes beforehand to allow time to park and walk to the start line. Those who plan to register at the start line should arrive by 6:45 a.m.

The scenic course follows gently rolling terrain through residential areas, beginning at the middle school and ending with a festive finish line at Nick’s Pro Fitness on Evergreen Parkway.

After the runners start at 8 a.m., walkers may follow. In the interest of safety and fairness to competitive runners, strollers and well-behaved dogs will be allowed only at the back of the walk.

Race participants and their families and friends are invited to join the finish-line festivities at Nick’s Pro Fitness, which will include refreshments, music and prizes. The party features fun activities for kids of all ages, including a bounce house and special race prizes.

The registration fee is $30 for adults and $15 for youths.
