Boating season is officially open at Evergreen Lake for those who enjoy paddling, sailing and drifting across smooth waters in a mountain setting.

From now until May 30, boat rentals are available at the lake on weekends. Beginning May 31, the lake will be open daily for boating through Aug. 18, weather permitting. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

“We’ve got some new paddle boats,” said Brad Bednar, Evergreen Lake House supervisor. Unlike the older boats, four people can paddle in them, he said.

Canoes, paddleboats and one-person kayaks can be rented for $8 per half hour. Two-person kayak rentals are $10 per half hour; sailboat rentals are $25 for four hours, and fishing boats are $20 for four hours. A deposit is required for all rentals beginning at $7 for paddle boats and canoes.

Evergreen Lake offers its fleet of Holder 12s for rental by qualified sailors when they are not being used for lessons. Renters must attend a two-hour private lesson to learn how to properly rig up the sailboat and skipper the craft before heading onto the lake. Sailboat rentals need to be scheduled with the boat staff and are available only during regular hours.

Private sailing lessons can be arranged with Lake Park staff for a fee of $45 an hour for private instruction and $35 an hour for semi-private instruction.

Private boats are allowed on the lake with restrictions because of higher safety measures in place at the lake. Private boaters are charged a daily fee of $4 or will have the option of purchasing a season park pass for $35. The pass, as well as the daily fee, help keep Evergreen Lake free of foreign species as well as ensure boaters are taking proper safety measures before launching, according to park district information.

Private boaters are required to check in with boat rental staff before launching. All boats must stay within the boundaries set by the lake staff and abide by lake rules. Only electric trolling motors are permitted; gas-powered engines are not allowed on the lake.

Private boaters may load and unload on the lake frontage road, but parking on the frontage road is prohibited.

Children under age 13 must be accompanied by an adult in all watercraft. Boats are rented on a first-come, first-served basis. Life jackets are required for all boaters and can be rented at the boat rental area for $5 per use.

Beginning June 1, the park district is offering youth sailing camps at the lake for youngsters ages 9 to 16 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon.
