Supporters of the Bergen Meadow field project are celebrating with a dedication and free picnic lunch on Friday, May 29. The ceremony is at noon, and the lunch is from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m., after the Bergen Meadow Elementary student Field Day.

The field is behind Bergen Meadow Elementary School on Hiwan Drive off Bergen Parkway.

The purpose is to thank the organizations that made it possible, including Great Outdoors Colorado, Jeffco Public Schools, the Evergreen Park and Recreation District, the Evergreen Recreation and Park Foundation, the Jefferson Foundation, local sports clubs, the Bergens PTA and BLC, Cub Scout and Brownie troops, local businesses and families.

Prior to the beautification project, the large field behind Bergen Meadow Elementary consisted mostly of gravel and weeds. In 2007, citizens successfully applied to Great Outdoors Colorado for a $200,000 grant to create two baseball and two soccer fields.

Evergreen Park and Recreation contributed $100,000 plus management time, and Jeffco Public Schools agreed to enter a joint use agreement with EPRD for after-school field use. About $50,000 came from local donors.

Construction began in spring 2008 and was completed on time in fall 2008 under the leadership of Pat Shea, park district operations chief.
