The Jeffco Sheriff’s Office is looking for two people who may have smashed as many as 50 mailboxes off Little Cub Creek Road in Evergreen a little after midnight on Dec. 30.
Lance Schul, a sheriff’s spokesman, said a resident in the 2700 block of Mountain Park Road heard a noise that night. Thinking it was something messing with his animals, he went outside to investigate and saw what he thought were two people smashing mailboxes.
Both were dressed in black, and Schul said the resident couldn’t tell if they were male or female.
When deputies came to investigate, they found that about 50 mailboxes were smashed along Mountain Park Road, Fern Gulch Road, Forest Hill Road and other nearby roads. Some were in mailbox banks, and some were freestanding. Schul said the department has no leads on suspects.
Sheriff’s spokeswoman Jacki Kelley said that while mailbox bashings aren’t uncommon, the volume of boxes hit makes the incident a little more serious.
“Fifty is a lot,” she said. “It ends up being in the felon range.”
Schul said damage to the mailboxes totaled between $2,500 and $3,000. He recommends being cautious with outgoing mail. Posting it from a mail dropbox is always the safest way, he said.
Anybody with information about the incident should call the Sheriff’s Office at 303-277-0211.
