EHS lacrosse coach Toby Plank leaves a legacy of respect, dedication

Remembering a beloved coach

Toby Plank loved the competition and the feeling winning provided. He enjoyed giving back to a sport that had given him so much. And he loved preparing players for the journey ahead of them.
So when the Evergreen High School boys lacrosse coach died Dec. 20 due to complications from carcinoid cancer, a rare form of neuroendocrine cancer, at the age of 36 he left behind a passion for the game that won’t soon be forgotten.

Hiwan Museum hires former Denver Zoo education chief

Bentek agrees to be acquired by Platts

A division of McGraw-Hill Cos. has agreed to acquire Bentek Energy LLC, a privately held company based in Evergreen. Terms of the deal were not disclosed in the Dec. 16 announcement.

The deal is expected to close in 2011. Bentek will continue to operate under the current name with the same management.

Bentek is known for providing information services in the field of natural gas markets. It employs about 100 people in offices on Castle Court off Evergreen Parkway.

Zoril named chief of Foothills Fire & Rescue

Interim acting fire chief Brian Zoril, a longtime volunteer firefighter, has been named chief of Foothills Fire & Rescue, it was announced Dec. 29. He becomes the second paid fire chief hired in the last 12 months and the second in the organization's history.

The headquarters station is at Interstate 70 and Evergreen Parkway, where the department is building a new garage.

Hunting for compromise

Living in the mountains means it's possible to bag an elk in your own backyard — provided it's hunting season and one has the proper license.

Disturbing though it may be to many neighbors in the idyllic bedroom communities of Evergreen, Genesee and Indian Hills, shooting elk on private property in unincorporated Jefferson County is legal, as long as the ammunition remains in the shooter's yard.

Herrin apologizes to judge for causing stress to victim, victim’s family and his parents

Housecleaner sentenced to 30 years for kidnapping

Joel Michael Herrin was sentenced Monday to 30 years in prison for kidnapping a woman from her Evergreen home on Dec. 29, 2009, forcing her to into his SUV and confining her in his apartment in Kittredge for nearly 12 hours.
Herrin, 41, had been working as a housecleaner in the woman’s home for four years.
Herrin previously pleaded guilty to first-degree kidnapping and attempted sexual assault Sept. 17. The sentencing originally was scheduled for Dec. 3 and was continued. Herrin originally could have faced a sentence of life in prison.

Fire departments respond to Lookout Mountain Community Church

A fire was reported Saturday afternoon at Lookout Mountain Community Church off I-70.
Dispatchers about 1:30 p.m. reported the call, and said the building’s sprinkler system was activated.
Foothills Fire & Rescue and Evergreen Evergreen Fire/Rescue were responding to the blaze.
