Sponsored by the Mountain Foothills Rotary Club, the Ice Melt Contest offers the opportunity to win $1,000 for the closest prediction to: "When will the ice melt enough to let the barrel fall into the water?"

Last year, the correct answer was April 12, about 2:35 p.m. Second, third and fourth prize winners will each get $500, $250 and $125, respectively.

School board votes to censure Boggs

By Barbara Ford

Jeffco school board member Laura Boggs was censured by the board Dec. 16, the first time such an action has been taken in district history.
The censure, on a unanimous vote, came after board members characterized Boggs’ behavior as erratic, disrespectful and inconsistent. District Superintendent Cindy Stevenson accused Boggs of “attacking the school district that she was elected to protect” during a conversation between the two.

District decides Parmalee kids will continue to move on to Conifer schools

Indian Hills boundary won't change

By Barbara Ford

Indian Hills students will continue to go to Conifer for middle school and high school, the Jeffco school board decided last Thursday, basing its decision primarily on the cost of bus transportation.

The board, ending a year-long debate, voted 4-1 not to change the existing boundary because it said transportation costs would be $17,000 less to bus Indian Hills students to Conifer rather than to Evergreen. Board member Laura Boggs was the dissenting vote.

School board won’t change Indian Hills boundary

By Barbara Ford

The debate over whether to send Indian Hills students to Conifer or Evergreen schools is over after the Jeffco school board voted 4-1 on Thursday not to change the existing boundary.
This means students from Indian Hills will go to Conifer for middle school and high school, and they will be provided bus transportation. Students will still be able to attend Evergreen for middle school and high school, but they will need to provide their own transportation.

By Emile Hallez

A California racing-oil company is facing $91,000 in fines from the federal Department of Labor, following a Lakewood videographer’s deadly fall from a modified lift at a June 25 motocross event.
Stuart Keene, 57, fell about 20 feet from the platform on an elevated lift that had its guardrails removed, said an official from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Keene was setting up equipment to film the Thunder Valley Nationals, a motocross event held at the Morrison track.

Little opposition to approval of 2011 Deer Creek Challenge

By Emile Hallez

Opposition to Jeffco’s approval of the second annual Deer Creek Challenge bicycle tour was almost nonexistent Dec. 7, compared to the vehement objections from canyon residents at last year’s public hearing.
The ride, with three courses ranging from 33 miles to 106 miles, is scheduled for Aug. 21, 2011, a day before the start of the highly anticipated Quizno’s Pro Challenge, a week-long bicycle race covering 600 miles in Colorado.
